Jestine Osumi: Since you don't qualify financially for state funded programs...you can look into state funded programs where only 50% of the children in the class must meet the finacial requirements. You will have to have 2 items checked on the "need" list to qualify for even these programs... but it's worth a shot.Other than that...no...there isn't free preschool available. Is it mandatory. No. I know that in our State even Kindergarten isn't mandatory (not that I agree with that). I can't remember quite off regarding CA...I know they have higher education standards and I remember some talk about making Kindergarten mandatory but I don't remember what came out of it. But preschool isn't.How will it effect your child if you become financially strapped and can't afford to send him to preschool? The little that he can get will be benefitial in the social aspect of things. Much of the "cognitive" will be taught at home anyway. So if you lose your job...and you are ho! me with him...you can "homeschool" preschool and also take him to free programs like story times and playgroups to continue some socialization exposure. Good luck in your decision making!...Show more
Kelly Bistodeau: Headstart!! that's where i went as a kid! lol! we were really poor back then! but my dad won the lottery so now we're not! woo hoo! jk! but he got promoted, lol!
Valentine Willinger: Pick up the yellow pages and call your local public school. Ask if there are any free preschools in any of the elementary schools in your district. If not then there is Head Start but you say you wouldn't qualify for that because your income isn't low enough. Church preschools are usually more reasonably priced. Preschool is not mandatory. If you lose your job and suddenly can't afford it anymore then it's legal to pull him out.
Stanton Degregorio: Yes, there is such a thing. In any state there is Headstart and in California there are also State preschoo! ls. Whether you qualify for them is another question.
Da! vid Boehler: If you make below a certain amount of income, you will qualify for free state preschool. Preschool is not mandatory. I also hear that Kindergarten is not mandatory also. Check out the link:http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/gs/em/kinderinfo.asp
Marcia Cheathan: Head Start. It's not just for poor kids anymore.
Amada Greising: im from asian and i dont know anything about usa but as i knew that the economy is quite bad so the free preschool stuff is hard to find or even exist anymore!
Dexter Dingus: Not sure if this changes your answers but we wouldn't qualify for lower income programs at this time.
Janita Tetlow: Not that I know of. I live in Canada and if you cannot afford it you can apply for subsidized care which the government will wither pay all of part of you fee depending on you financial state.
Chris Rosenkranz: headstart is not just for the poor anymore. where i work we have 10% that means that even if you are over income your child ! may still get in.. We also have a before and after school program. we are open from 6-6. you might wont to check it out..
Rebeca Mckin: Have you checked into cooperative preschools? There are some good ones near us in Virginia and I considered them for my daughter. The price is lessoned by having parents work in the preschool in different forms (helping the teachers, cleaning the school, etc.). I don't know the prices offhand because it's been a while but I think they have to less expensive because you're doing some work there to help reduce the cost. In the end, though, preschool isn't mandatory and your son can definately not go to preschool if you can't afford it. I'm sure there will be lots of people with passionate opinions pro and against preschool. Seems to me that a good preschool can provide enrichment but so can a good parent. If preschool doesn't work out for whatever reason, just make sure he has the opportunity to get opportunities to socialize with! other kids in a class-like experience (maybe Sunday school or a sports! class). Good luck!...Show more
