Why is restoration theatre important?

Charis Deguzman: After Charles II was restored to the throne of England in 1660, he took over from the Puritans who had been ruling since Charles I was executed. The Puritans were anti-theatre, and so when Charles was restored (and he restored the theatres) theatre was able to take up issues and make commentary that it hadn't been able to do during the interregnum (the between-kings-time). Restoration comedy in particular was more bawdy and adventurous than any theatre England had seen in a while.
