Is there stability in performing arts?

Alisia Sutphen: It's hard. It's competitive. There are many people out there like you. You want to go big, don't you? That's gonna take a lot of dedication and determination. So yea....it's not really stable.

Angel Klym: This question implies that there is "stability" in any job. Just look at the unemployment rate and ask yourself how many of those people thought they had stable jobs and now do not. Life is unstable. That said, the most "stable" jobs to get in performing arts usually involve being a teacher, being a company member, or being in arts management. If you want to be an actor with a stable job the most stable jobs you can luck into are probably in television (Jerry Seinfield had a great steady job for a while). However getting that stable job involves a lot of shorter jobs leading up to being very lucky and holding onto that job as long as possible. Being in the arts means that you are going to need to scrap jobs together. If your goal is to find ! something steady you can probably find something but it is going to take a while. See if you can find someone with a steady art job and figure out how they got there. Would you be willing to take the path to find something similar?...Show more

Coleen Carignan: Its totally not stable. The performers you see in the media are just the tip of the iceberg. Most Actors, musicians, and dancers have jobs outside of performing as it is very competitive and you are not guaranteed a role or chance to perform at all. I wouldn't say don't pursue it as a career, however just make sure you have something to fall back on if it doesn't work.
